Mariane Pearl

Her first book "A Mighty Heart" (Scribner) was first published in the United States in 2003. Mariane was five months pregnant when her husband, The Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and brutally murdered by a militant Islamic fundamentalist group in Pakistan in 2002. Determined not to be broken, Mariane wrote a memoir celebrating the values of humanism and dignity while offering a detailed account of the investigation led in Pakistan to rescue her husband. The book won international praise and was translated into 15 languages. In 2007, it was released as a major feature movie starring Angelina Jolie in the role of Mariane Pearl. Her second book "In Search of Hope" (Powerhouse) is a collection of profiles of extraordinary women around the world. The collection first appeared over two years as a series of columns in Glamour magazine, the largest circulating women's magazine in the world. Her "Global Diaries" feature women from Cambodia, Cuba, Liberia, Mexico, Turkey, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Uganda, Senegal, Italy, France, the US, Russia, the North Pole and more. They focus on women who are role models in the way they used their own lives to transform their environment. Mariane contributes to many publications such as The New York Times, The Sunday Times, the Conde Nast traveler, Self Magazine and others. She also works for broadcast media reporting and producing documentaries. She is currently writing her third book and working on a documentary on resilience. Her earlier work includes the documentary series "The Gene Jungle" covering the sensitive issues surrounding the application of genetic technology to contemporary challenges. Biological memory, the second report in this series, won the prestigious Science and Society Award at the International Festival of Scientific Film, held in Canada. In Paris, Mariane covered immigration and identity issues, using her daily radio program that she developed, produced and hosted for Radio France International to explore issues of society, identity and politics. She is the recipient of the National Headliners award for magazine writing, the Time Warner women award, the Woman of the year award, The White House project award, the AWRT (American Women in Radio and Television) award, the Internews award for excellence in international reporting, the Vital Voices award, "El Mundo" editorial award in Spain, and the Prix "Vérité" in France for excellence in non-fiction writing, among other honors.
