After law school, Doug moved to Central California to be close to his beloved Sierra Nevada. An avid rock climber, whitewater kayaker, ski instructor, and fly fisherman, Doug has lived outdoors all of his life. Doug clerked for the Honorable George A. Hopper, Associate Justice of the California Court of Appeals, Fifth Appellate District, then joined the law firm of Lang, Richert & Patch, P.C. He tried dozens of large, complex business cases involving millions and tens of millions of dollars before state and federal juries, administrate tribunals, arbitrations, and bankruptcy adversary proceedings. As an experienced trial lawyer, he was viewed by his colleagues as tenacious, ferocious, and tough. He is AV-rated by Martindale Hubbell, which is given to the top 1% of the lawyers in the world. After Doug was awarded his 2d degree black belt in a northern Chinese style of kung fu, he was sent by his teacher to learn tai chi. His life took on a new direction as he studied the two paradoxes of tai chi-the softer you are, the stronger you are; the more vulnerable you are, the more powerful you are. As Doug questioned, studied, and learned the deep truths in these paradoxes, he began to see his law career as limiting his potential to serve. Doug tells the story of his transformation from courtroom lawyer to peacemaker. He enrolled in a Masters Degree program in Peacemaking and Conflict Studies and was instructed in the nuances of conflict and peace by his Mennonite teachers.
